The Mayans referred to this day as “the return of the sun serpent.” At Chichen Itza, Mexico, an ancient pyramid built around A.D. 1000 serves as the centerpiece of this astronomical event, as reported by The Old Farmer’s Almanac. As the sunlight shifts, it casts an illusion of a massive serpent slithering down the pyramid’s steps, signifying the changing of the seasons.
